General checklist and what it costs

Motorcycle winter storage

A bike needs less room than a car but the same care: clean, fueled, charged and covered. This is general advice. Follow your owner’s manual where it says something different.

A general checklist

  1. Wash and dry it

Remove salt, dirt and bugs. Dry the chain and the metal parts.

  2. Fuel

A full tank with a fuel stabilizer is the common advice for storage longer than about a month (CAA, Canadian Tire, for cars). Check your manual for how to treat the fuel system.

  3. Oil and filter

Fresh oil before long storage is the common advice for cars. Check the manual for your bike.

  4. Battery

Use a battery tender or remove the battery and keep it charged. Do not leave it to go flat.

  5. Tires

Set the pressure. A centre stand or paddock stand takes the weight off the tires, if your bike can use one.

  6. Cover

A breathable cover, indoors if you can. Not plastic sheeting.

  7. Rodents

Block exhaust openings and use repellents, and note each plug you fit.
