Outdoor car storage

An outdoor spot in a fenced lot gets the car off your street or driveway and out of the way of overnight bans and snow plows. It is the cheapest option, and with some preparation most cars come through a winter fine.

Keeping a car healthy outside

Wash first

Salt and grime sit on the paint all winter otherwise.

Use a breathable cover

A plastic tarp traps moisture. A fitted, breathable cover keeps snow and dust off.

Plan for the battery

Take it home and charge it, or ask for a spot with power for a tender. Cold drains a battery faster.

Block rodents

Mice nest in air boxes and chew wiring. Plug the exhaust and air intake, and remind yourself to unplug them in spring.

Do not use the parking brake

Brakes can stick over a long winter. Use wheel chocks in gear or park.

Outdoor storage questions

Is it safe to store a car outdoors all winter?

Most modern cars handle it if prepared. Read storing a car outside in winter for the risks and how to reduce them.

Why not just leave it on my driveway?

You can, if your city allows it and the car stays plated, with valid insurance. Several cities restrict unplated or inoperative vehicles on private property. See street and driveway rules.
